Hello, and welcome to another 10-step art tutorial! Today, we are going to learn how to draw a minion together!
Created by Illumination Entertainment for the animated film Despicable Me, the minions have soared into fame. From their initial conception in 2010, the minions captured the hearts of many and now appear on toys, clothing, accessories, and more, and even got their own movie—Minions—in 2015.
Part of what makes them so loveable is the language they speak, called Minionese. It’s a mix between English, French, Spanish, and Italian, with some nonsense words thrown in. However, with their animated body language, viewers can typically understand the minions. Overall, the minions are known as funny and expressive little creatures and are loved around the world.
Let’s get started on the tutorial now! Find some drawing materials and keep reading for Step 1. As always, we will have pictures as part of the project and learn some more facts about minions along the way.

Time needed:
15 minutes.
Step 1 – Draw the eyes.
Let’s get started with the eyes! This is one of the more recognizable features of the minions.
To begin, draw two circles next to each other about two-thirds of the way up the page. Inside each circle, draw a slightly smaller circle for the pupil. Fill in the smaller circles. However, leave a tiny dot in each eye to show a friendly twinkle!
Awesome start!
Step 2 – Draw the goggles.
Minions wear goggles, which are practical protective items and fashion statements!
To draw the goggles, outline the eyes with another line that mimics the shape. Add two rectangles on either side to show the goggle strap, as seen from the front.
Step 3 – Start outlining the body.
Minions have a distinctive ovular shape. In this step, we will start drawing that outline. Draw a large, narrow curve that goes above the goggles and below the torso. Check out the photo!
Step 4 – Start drawing the overalls.
The famous minion outfit is made of blue overalls with large grey buttons. Of course, that is what our minion will be wearing, too! Let’s start drawing the outfit in the step.
Draw two small, slanted rectangles for the straps of the overalls. They should be a few inches below the eyes and to the side. We will finish the rest of the overalls later!
Step 5 – Continue drawing the body.
Draw a U shape for the bottom half of the body. Leave small gaps on either side below the overall straps—the arms will go in these gaps. Check out the photo. Great job!
Step 6 – Draw the arms.
Draw two arms now. Beneath the overall straps, draw bent arms—the minion should look like its standing with its hands on its hips. The minions also wear gloves, so add some to your minion drawing!
Step 7 – Finish the overalls.
Let’s add more detail to the iconic overalls. Draw a horizontal line that connects the straps for the top edge of the outfit. Next, draw curves from the straps to the hands to show the arm cutouts. Lastly, draw a pocket centered on the front of the overalls.
Step 8 – Draw the legs.
Minions are short and cute little creatures. Let’s add legs to our minions! Draw a short rectangle for each leg. Add some shoes since the minions wear boots. Great job.
Step 9 – Add a smile and hair!
Minions are some of the most loveable little characters, so ours must have a big smile! Draw a curve for the smile. Draw it a little bit crooked on the right side of the face.
Next, let’s add hair. Draw small lines across the head for short hairs.
Step 10 – Color in your drawing!
Time to color in your minion!
Minions are typically yellow because the creators wanted them to be happy, positive, funny little creatures; yellow is associated with those feelings. However, there have also been variations in their clothing. Although minions look almost identical, they all have their own names. So, add some personality and individuality as part of this step!
As always, fill in the background too! Be creative and have fun—there are no wrong answers!
Pin it now, Draw later!
