How to Draw a St. Patrick’s Day Coin Hat — Let’s get started!

Step 1 – Start with the Bottom of the Hat.

How to Draw St. Patrick’s Day Coin Hat - Step 1 - Start with the Bottom of the Hat.

Draw a curved “U” shape opening upward, like a big smile. From each end of the “U”, add short lines curving upward. These form the base of the crown—the bottom part of the hat.

Tip: If your curve looks too flat, don’t worry! You can round it out later when tracing.

Step 2 – Draw the Hat’s Brim.

Now let’s add the wide brim!

From one upward line to the other, draw a long, gently curved horizontal line. Curve both ends upward slightly—it should look like a stretched-out oval.

Fun Fact: Leprechaun hats with wide brims are perfect for hiding a few shiny secrets!

Step 3 – Add the Brim’s Inner Curve.

On the left side, draw a short curved line just below the top of the brim. This adds depth and makes it look more realistic—like a 3D edge or lip.

Step 4 – Mirror the Inner Curve.

Repeat the same curved line on the right side of the brim to match the left. Now your brim has shape and dimension!

Tip: Try to keep both sides even to keep things balanced.

Step 5 – Draw the Belt and Buckle.

Draw a large rectangle across the lower part of the hat—this will be the buckle.
Then, underneath the rectangle, draw a curved horizontal line stretching from one side to the other to create the belt.

Fun Fact: Buckled hats were all the rage in the 1600s—and leprechauns never gave up the style!

Step 6 – Add the Inner Buckle.

Inside the rectangle, draw a smaller rectangle to create the inner frame of the buckle.

Tip: Use a ruler for straight edges—or freehand for a handmade charm!

Step 7 – Draw Four Coins.

It’s time for treasure!

On top of the brim, draw four small ovals at different angles. These are your coins. Under each one, add a short curve to give them thickness and make them look 3D.

Stack them close together, like they’re about to tumble out!

Step 8 – Add Gold Piles.

Around your coins, draw some wavy, cloud-like shapes to represent soft piles of gold.

Make some bumps big, others small—randomness makes it look natural and fun!

Fun Fact: Leprechauns must grant three wishes or hand over their gold if caught. So guard your treasure well!

Step 9 – Color Your Drawing!

Time to bring it all to life!

Coloring Ideas:

  • Hat: Dark green for the brim and base
  • Belt: Black
  • Buckle: Bright yellow or gold
  • Coins & Gold Piles: Rich yellow or golden orange, with white highlights for shine

Bonus Fun: Add glitter glue, stars, a rainbow, or even a tiny leprechaun peeking out from behind—especially fun if you’ve already drawn the pot of gold tutorial to go with it!
