Step-by-Step Drawing Guide
Step 1: Sketch the Top of the Dragon Head and Branching Horns

Start near the top of the page with a wide curved line, like the top half of a circle. Add two to three branching horn shapes above it, using soft, leaf-like bumps. On the left side, tuck in a small pointed ear to suggest the dragon’s head.
Step 2: Add the Eyes, Snout, and Long Whiskers

Draw two round eyes on the front of the head, then add small circles inside for highlights. Shape the snout with a soft, bean-like oval, and add a gentle smile line with two tiny nostril dots. Finally, pull two long whisker lines from the mouth area so they flow outward.
Step 3: Add the Mane and Neck Spikes

Along the back edge of the head, add a row of flame-like mane shapes with rounded pointed petals. Then place a few small triangle spikes under the jaw toward the neck to build a clear transition into the body.
Step 4: Extend the Long Body and Tail Curve

From under the head, pull a long curved line downward to form the chest and front body. From the back of the neck, draw a longer wavy line that flows right and lifts up at the end to create the tail. Add two short belly curves underneath, leaving a gap for now.
Step 5: Add the Flame Back Fin and the Fan-Shaped Tail Tuft

Inside the wavy back line, add a flowing flame-shaped fin made of connected soft points. At the tail tip, draw a fan of leaf-like tufts spreading from one base, then add a few short inner lines to suggest texture.
Step 6: Add Belly Stripes and Segment the Tiny Foot

Add a few short curved bands along the neck-to-belly side to suggest segmented belly scales, spacing them evenly. Then sketch a small foot along the bottom edge and split it into toe blocks with two or three short vertical lines. Add a few short bands on the inner tail to carry the same texture to the back.
Step 7: Add the Front Legs and Rounded Paws

Under the neck at the front of the body, draw two short, thick legs that drop straight down. Round the bottoms like little boots, then add three to four small curved bumps for toes so the dragon feels grounded.
Step 8: Add the Back Legs for a Stable Stance

Under the back half of the body, draw a thicker back leg that curves down with a rounded shape, then closes with a soft paw bottom. Add a smaller hidden paw under the belly by drawing just the toes and front edge, so it feels farther back.
Step 9: Add Small Scale Texture Marks

Scatter small curved “three-stroke” marks on the side of the body to suggest scales, like tiny clouds or parentheses. Place most of them under the back fin, along the middle body, and near the tail, with slight size changes. Leave some open space so the texture stays neat.
Step 10: Color in your drawing!

Fun Facts
- Chinese dragons are often shown as long and snake-like, with flowing whiskers and a lively mane.
- In many stories, Chinese dragons are connected with water, clouds, and rain.
- Artists often add extra details, like flames and scales, to show energy and motion.
Pin it now, Draw later!

You now have a complete Chinese dragon with a friendly face, a flowing body, and textured scales. For coloring, try a warm red or green body with a lighter belly, then add gentle shading under the chin and along the legs. A common beginner mistake is making the body too stiff, so keep the curves smooth like a ribbon.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make the dragon look more “Chinese”?
Use long whiskers, branching horns, and a wavy body. A flame-like mane and back fin also help the style feel traditional.
My body curve looks wobbly. What can I do?
Start with a very light guiding curve first. Then trace it with one smooth line, moving your whole arm instead of only your fingers.
Can I add more scales without making it messy?
Yes, but leave small gaps between texture marks. Spread the scales in clusters instead of covering every space.
