How to Draw a St. Patrick’s Day Top Hat — Let’s get started!
Step 1 – Draw the Hat’s Crown.

Let’s start with the main part of the hat, called the crown.
Draw a curved line at the top, kind of like a soft rainbow. Then draw two lines slanting slightly outward going down. The shape should look like a bucket that’s wider at the top than at the bottom.
Tip: Try to keep both sides even so your hat doesn’t tilt to one side!
Don’t worry if it’s a little wobbly—that just adds extra charm!
Step 2 – Add the Top Oval.

Now let’s make the top of the hat look more 3D!
Connect the top ends of the crown with a stretched-out oval. This gives your hat depth and makes it pop off the page.
Fun Fact: Top hats like this were often worn by Irish gentlemen in the 1800s!
Step 3 – Start the Hatband.

Time to draw the start of the band that wraps around the bottom of the hat.
Draw two small curves at the base—one on each side. They should curve outward like little smiles.
Step 4 – Connect the Band.

Connect those two curved lines with a longer curved line under the crown.
Now your hat is really starting to take shape!
Step 5 – Add a Buckle.

Let’s decorate the band with a shiny leprechaun buckle!
Draw a square in the middle of the band. This will be the outside of the buckle.
Fun Fact: Buckles on hats may not have always been stylish—but on St. Patrick’s Day, they’re magical!
Step 6 – Finish the Buckle.

Make the buckle look real!
Draw a smaller square inside the big one, and then draw a tiny rectangle in the center to look like the belt’s tongue.
Tip: Don’t worry about perfect lines—every buckle has character!
Step 7 – Add Detail to the Band.

Now let’s complete the band.
Draw lines from each side of the buckle to the edges of the hatband. This helps show how the band wraps all the way around.
Step 8 – Draw the Hat’s Brim.

Let’s add the big, swoopy brim!
Draw a wide curve under the band that stretches out on both sides like a mustache. Then connect the ends with a gentle upward curve. This forms the hat’s brim.
Creative Idea: Want to make a wizard-style version? Make the brim super wide and dramatic!
Step 9 – Color Your Drawing!

Time to bring your top hat to life!
- Hat & Brim: Green
- Band: Black
- Buckle: Gold or yellow
- Belt inside the buckle: Dark gray or black
Extra Fun: Add glitter, stickers, or even draw a little leprechaun peeking out—maybe with a few shamrocks from our Shamrock Coloring Page for extra flair!
Pin it now, Draw later!
