How to Draw a St. Patrick’s Day Gold Coin — Let’s get started!

Step 1 – Draw a Big Circle.

How to Draw St. Patrick’s Day Gold Coin - Step 1 - Draw a Big Circle.

Start by drawing a big circle in the center of your paper. This will be the outer edge of your coin.

Tip: Struggling with circles? Try tracing something round like a cup, a lid, or a roll of tape. Even artists use tools sometimes!

Step 2 – Draw a Smaller Circle Inside.

Inside your big circle, draw a second, slightly smaller circle. Keep it centered, with a small space between the two.

This space forms the rim of your coin, just like on real coins!

Fun Fact: Real coins have ridges around the edge to help people identify them by touch—especially useful for those with vision loss.

Step 3 – Draw the First Clover Leaf.

Now, time for the lucky part—the clover!

In the center of your coin, draw a small heart shape. This will be the first clover leaf. Point the heart downward toward the center of the coin.

Did you know? A four-leaf clover is super rare—only about 1 in 10,000 clovers has four leaves!

Step 4 – Add the Second Leaf.

Add a second heart shape next to the first one, curving it slightly outward. Tilt it a bit to “hug” the first leaf.

You’re halfway there!

Step 5 – Add the Third Leaf.

Now draw a third heart shape on the opposite side of the clover. It should match the other two in size and tilt slightly outward.

Your clover is almost complete!

Step 6 – Finish the Clover with the Fourth Leaf.

Draw one last heart shape to finish your four-leaf clover.

Make sure all four leaves point in different directions and meet at the center.

Fun Fact: Each clover leaf is said to represent hope, faith, love, and luck!

Step 7 – Add Lines Around the Coin’s Edge.

How to Draw St. Patrick’s Day Gold Coin - Step 7 - Add Lines Around the Coin’s Edge.

To make your coin look more realistic, draw short, straight lines in the space between your two circles. These lines should be evenly spaced around the rim.

They’ll make your coin look sturdy and shiny—like real gold!

Tip: Divide the space into halves, then quarters, then eighths—it’ll help keep your spacing even.

Step 8 – Connect the Lines to Make the Rim.

Now connect the ends of those small lines to create blocky sections along the coin’s rim. This gives it texture and a 3D feel—just like a real gold coin!

Creative Idea: Add sparkles, tiny stars, or even leprechaun footprints between the rim lines for some extra magic!

Step 9 – Color Your Drawing!

You’ve finished your sketch—now it’s time to bring your coin to life with color!

Coloring Guide:

  • Outer Rim: Gold or dark yellow
  • Center Area: Light yellow or golden orange
  • Clover: Emerald green or sparkly green crayon
  • Shine: Use white for highlights to make the coin look 3D and shiny

Bonus Tip: Use glitter gel pens or metallic markers for a shimmering treasure effect!
