Hello! Are you excited for today’s drawing tutorial? Today, we are going to learn how to draw a bow.
Bows are cute accessories that can be worn in the hair or on clothes. Additionally, you may find them on presents, decorations, and more—as shown in our step-by-step Christmas present drawing guide. similar to how a crown drawing can add a royal flair to your sketches. Our bow is going to look like one you may wear in hair—but it’s also perfect for gift wrapping, like in our how to draw a Christmas present tutorial.
Bows have gone in and out of style over the years, and you may see people wearing them more around the holidays—especially when paired with regal accessories like the ones in our how to draw a crown tutorial. Bows are typically made of ribbon, but they could be made of other soft materials, too. Have you ever worn a bow?
So, let’s learn how to draw a bow with this easy bow drawing for beginners. Find some drawing materials and let’s go—keep reading for Step 1! Have fun!

How to Draw a Bow — Let’s get started!
Step 1 – Draw a heart.
Our bow is going to be really cute. To start off the drawing, simply draw a small heart a little bit more than halfway up the page.
Step 2 – Add detail to the heart.
We are going to add a border to the heart. Right outside the outline of the heart you just drew, draw the same shape, so it looks like it has a border.
Step 3 – Start drawing the shape of the bow.
If you have ever seen a bow, you probably know the basic shape: the knot, the bow, and the ribbon tails. In this step, we are going to start to draw the main bow shape.
On either side of the bow, you are going to draw two long curved lines. One should be at the top of the heart while the other is at the bottom. The should curve slightly into each other. Refer to the photo.
Step 4 – Add dimension to the bow.
Let’s add more body to the shape of the bow. In this step, we will make it look three-dimensional. Check out the photo for this step! Connect the outer ends of the bottom curves back into the bottom of the heart. This will make it look like the ribbon has real shape.
Good job! We’re making progress!
Step 5 – Draw the sides of the bow.
Let’s continue with the contour of the bow. From the top to the bottom of each side of the bow, draw a curved line. Make it dip inwards a little bit in the middle. Great job!
Step 6 – Add more detail to the bow.
Let’s add detail to the interior of the ribbon. Draw a few small lines extending outward from the heart. These lines indicate wrinkles in the fabric.
Step 7 – Start drawing the tail of the ribbon.
Next, let’s move onto drawing a ribbon bow tail. In reality, the tail can be as long as your piece of ribbon!
Ours will be pretty long, extending nearly to the end of the page. Draw two slanting lines beginning from the bottom center of the heart. They should diverge away from each other, forming a triangle.
Step 8 – Add more to the tail.
Draw a line on either side of the ones you just drew. It should look like there are two ends now, each one a few inches wide. Check out the photo!
Step 9 – Draw the bottom outline.
We’re nearly done with our step by step bow drawing. Connect the ribbon tails with a V shape. Now it should look exactly like the recognizable shape of a bow.
Step 10 – Color in your bow!
Find some colors to fill in your masterpiece. You can color in your ribbon however you want, of course. Pink, blue, purple, multicolored—go for it! Is your ribbon patterned or solid? Have fun with it and take your time. Fill in the background, too!
